Fence Regulations
Fences are allowed on residential, commercial, and industrial properties, but must follow rules for height, materials, and placement. On residential lots, fences can be up to 2.4 metres high in rear and side yards but are limited to 0.75 metres in front yards or near intersections to maintain clear sightlines. Fences must be constructed with durable materials and present a finished side to neighbours or the street. Barbed wire and electrified fences are not permitted in residential areas.
Swimming Pool Enclosures
Anyone installing a private outdoor swimming pool with a depth of 45 cm or more must first obtain a permit for a compliant enclosure. Enclosures must be between 1.5 and 2.4 metres in height, restrict unauthorized access, and be located at least 1.2 metres from the pool’s edge. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and above-ground pool walls or decks may be used as part of the enclosure if they meet the required standards.
Non-Residential Properties
Fences on non-residential properties can be up to 3 metres high. Specific setbacks apply to front yard fences in commercial or industrial zones. Salvage yards must be fully enclosed with a solid, uniform fence at least 2.4 metres tall.
Additional Notes
Fences are not permitted on public lands, including road allowances, without prior written approval from the Town. Property owners are responsible for maintaining fences in good condition and ensuring they comply with visibility and safety requirements.
