Vehicle for Hire

Vehicle for Hire

Whether you’re interested in launching a taxi, limo service, or joining a ride-share platform like Uber, the Town of Petawawa licenses and regulates all Vehicles for Hire. This helps ensure safety, fairness, and quality service for passengers in our community.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what you need to know:

What is a Vehicle for Hire?

A Vehicle for Hire includes:

  • Taxicabs
  • Limousines
  • Private Transportation Company (PTC) vehicles like Uber or Lyft

If you’re offering paid transportation services from any point within Petawawa, you must be licensed.

Licence Types

There are two main licences under this by-law:

Driver’s Licence – Required for anyone operating a Vehicle for Hire.

Owner’s Licence – Required for anyone who owns or provides a vehicle used to transport passengers or goods for hire.

Each vehicle must have its own licence.

All applicants (both owners and drivers) must:

  • Visit the Town Hall in person
  • Submit a written application
  • Pay the required licence fee (refundable if the application is denied)
  • Licences are valid for one year, from January 1 to December 31
  • Renewal applications must be submitted 15 days before expiry
  • The licensing process is overseen by the Town Clerk
  • The by-law is enforced by local by-law officers and the OPP
